interfaith

India is a great country. India is a mixture of multitudinous cultures .

What makes India so special?

The following story would help you get a cue.

About two centuries ago, the Pope of Rome made a tall proclamation that all the Jews had to leave the city. There was a big uproar in the city and all Jews were worried.

So the Pope made a deal with the Jews

“Let us have a religious debate. If I win, you have to leave the city—and if you win- you can very well stay back in this great city of Rome”. The Jews tried looking out for a champion who can defeat the pope in this religious battle but couldn’t find any.

They finally turned towards an old frail and feeble farmer named MOISHE and pleaded “Moishe- you have got nothing to lose- you have to challenge the pope”. “Brothers, I’m very old and I’ve got no subjective knowledge of religions- I think this is an ill favored thing brothers- an ill favored thing- but, as you are insisting- I have nothing to lose – so let me have a SILENT DEBATE with the pope”, replied Moishe.

Fortunately, the pope agreed for a silent debate.

It was an auspicious day with  royal members all around and 2 beautiful chairs laid down for the Pope and Moishe and that signaled the start of the great silent debate.

  • After a minute the Pope raised his hand and showed three fingers. Moshe looked back and raised one finger.
  • The Pope waved his fingers in a circle around his head. Moishe pointed to the ground.
  • The Pope pulled out a wafer and a glass of wine. Moishe pulled out an apple.

The Pope stood up and said, “I give up. This man is too good. The Jews can stay.”

All the royal members gathered around the pope and asked him why did he lose the debate?

As the puzzled cardinals clustered around the Pope, he explained: “First I held up three fingers to represent the Trinity. He held up one finger to remind me that one God is common to both our religions. When I waved my finger around me to show that God was all around us, he pointed down to show that God is also right here with us. When I showed him the wine and the wafer to show that God absolves us from our sins, he showed me an apple to remind me of original sin. He had an answer for everything. What could I do?”

Meanwhile, the Jews had crowded around Moshe. “What happened?” they asked. “Well,” said Moshe, “He says to me, ‘You Jews have three days to leave.’ So I said: ‘Not even one is going to leave!'” Then he tells me the whole city would be cleared of Jews. So I said to him, ‘Listen here, Popey baby, the Jews … we stay right here.” “And then?” asked a woman. “Who knows?” said Moshe. “He took out his lunch so I took out mine.

This is how the debate got concluded and Jews were allowed to stay in the city of Rome.

This story brings the fact as to how we bring our own interpretations into our daily discussions and debate. We’ve got so many drawing lines in the sand many divisions everywhere on the subject of thoughts beliefs and actions. I don’t like what you say and you don’t like what I say and so we have got the liberty to fight with each other.

The question is how do we control this? …We can control this only through a great sense of diplomacy and interfaith. What is this interfaith? …. If a person A has got a liberty to demonstrate his conviction in spite of the fact that B believes in something different & still A & B  live in peace and harmony- that is interfaith.

This is what India is famous for.

Let us all agree to disagree on various issues but still learn to live in peace and harmony.

But “WHY”

IMG_0058.jpg

“Man grows by feeding “WHY”. The denomination called WHY could be rationalistic or a sense of introspection. It can come from a constant struggle between “where am I and where am I going? “. The foundational basis for every fundamental aspect in this universe gets its shape from WHY. WHY is the beginning of ideation. WHY is the beginning of consciousness. WHY is the beginning of intelligence. WHY is the beginning of a true beginning.

The Eminence of Solitude

into_the_wildWhat happens when you go beyond what you think is real, what you think is way of life, what you feel is happiness in general…what you can see..what you can hear..what you can touch…stepping into the wild unknown of everything…The movie “Into the wild” depicts the eminence of solitude. For all those who are going stark raving mad about their way of life…forgo the bitterness and enjoy this flick. Based on a real life incident-the movie is a sincere wonderment to all those who get connected with its “quotes” :

“The sea’s only gifts are harsh blows, and occasionally the chance to feel strong. Now I don’t know much about the sea, but I do know that that’s the way it is here. And I also know how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong but to feel strong. To measure yourself at least once. To find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions. Facing the blind deaf stone alone, with nothing to help you but your hands and your own head”

“If we admit that human life can be ruled by reason, then all possibility of life is destroyed”

“I’m going to paraphrase Thoreau here… rather than love, than money, than faith, than fame, than fairness… give me truth”

“The core of mans’ spirit comes from new experiences”

“Mr. Franz, I think careers are a 20th century invention and I don’t want one”

“It is easy, when you are young, to believe that what you desire is no less than what you deserve, to assume that if you want something badly enough, it is your God-given right to have it”

“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods; / There is a rapture on the lonely shore; / There is society, where none intrudes, / By the deep sea, and music in its roar; / I love not man the less, but Nature more… / “.

The Majestic Mouser

It always feels special to play with this “Unwelcomed Guest” who is as good as a small baby and whose emotions are not only absolute, and formless but also honest and touching. Come what may, it does whatever it likes and as someone says, it is a snug as a bug in a rug.

It was 4  in the morning, the alarm sounded cranky and woke me up saying “Marina Calling”. 4 of us got ready, boarded the very first local train in the morning, and reached the beach road. The Marina’s majestic view made the city of Chennai look charismatic for the very first time. Lots of people, some with balloons, some with cameras setting their lens, fishermen ready catching the ropes to pull in their boats,  some with curious eyes were throwing their sight at the sublime horizon as if they are waiting for something unusual to happen.

“It will come at 5:32 exactly…come here”…..people started shouting and moving to all possible view points on the seashore. We had a look at the time, it was “5:30……..5:31………5:32……..5:33”, the horizon underwent a cutest possible confusion whether to show up, red, orange or sublime, and then it finally left the choice for the Splendorous Reddish Sun which slowly arose amid the confused horizon. Eyebrows were up, eyes wide open to see that Sincere Wonderment. Their beautiful combination was exceptional. That wonderful vista was an ultimate treat to the eyes. For a moment, people were awestruck when everyone were shed upon by the first rays  of the sun and started looking exactly like their shadows standing.well, its the magic of the rays.  The very first sun rays paved a straight bright light on waves towards the shore, as if showing us some way to reach the divine cosmos.

Marina was throwing its waves up and down at us, asking, “how’s that? “…Well, that’s Marina’s Magic. for you

Leading by Example.

People talk about being a leader and lead by example, but what sort of Example and who are we leading, nobody told me at least. It’s like that clichéd word ‘Discipline’ which I have been told from my childhood, Nobody told me what discipline meant, but they all wanted me to be and told me that I am not disciplined.

Everything is Perspective in Life, everybody has their own way of dealing with things and in general people try to bombard their views on others, just because their views worked for them. Whenever I read the emails sent to us by the so called Leaders, I find them vague with no practical application ,and these short stories on the topics are a way to categorise these vague topics to a more ground level ,so that we all can Understand what they mean to us and how we can use them.

There is a theory called Chaos theory which says ,everything and everyone in this world are connected .if there is an Earthquake somewhere in the world, its 100% sure that it was caused by a butterfly fluttering its wings half a world away. Things are connected.

It’s been Proven that ,although we are all connected and try to emulate some things from others, we all are different and there is a threshold of how far a person can Motivate others. Things have a limit.

There are four different types of personalities in all of us, we use these personalities depending on the situation. They are Namely :

(1) Director : Expert at a technology(even way of Life and way of talking is a technology!) and theory, but no Operational Idea on how to do it. This Personality tries to direct people around them. This happens when a new person enters into the team and a so called veteran in that team tries to ‘direct’ the new person into how do we do things here.

(2) Coach : Expert at a technology and also the operational way of doing it. This Personality tries to force the way things are done on others. This could happen when there is a change of technology and/or going into a new role in the same Project.

(3) Support : This Personality tries to be empathetic and if in personal life, sympathetic and behave like a family

(4) Delegate : This Personality tries to make other people work and sit idle.

These four Personalities are the major type of Behaviour which we all fall into under various situations whilst dealing with life or Career.

Now ,to the main topic ,what is a Leadership?

Leadership is a mix and Match of all the four types of Personalities above. To say, we are all Leaders. Usually, whenever we read the word Leader, we start imagining a team and we trying to be one of the roles above. But, being a Leader is not about we having a team and people to try our methodologies on. Being a Leader is trying to understand which style best suits which situation, first in our own way of dealing with our life.

And as we already thought, there is a Limit for everything , but still everything is connected. To re-iterate, we are all Leaders, how best we use and how and when to leave people and ourselves alone is the differentiating Principle which we need to Understand. There is a way to do it , and the following chart will help us

(1) The People who ask for Solutions when given with a problem are called as Coach

(2) The people who tell Solutions when given with a problem are called as Advisor

(3) The people who tell problems when given with a problem are called as consultant

(4) The people who ask for problems when given with an issue are called Counsellor

The Best style, looks like is to be a Counsellor and Coach ,as they tend to get the people who come to you with issues get thinking on their own.

The lesser styles are the Consultant and Advisor, as they leave the people who come to you with issues depend on you, which leads to unnecessary time burden and pressures. However, Practically, we get to see all sorts of People around us ,and we will never know which style of Leadership works for them. We have to be ,all of the above. The Best order to start with is to be a Counsellor, then if it does not work, be a coach, then an Advisor and finally a consultant in a short team like ours and also for a large teams.

I did a soul-searching and I realized , I behave like a Director and Adviser more than anything else, which keeps me under the lower radar of a leader.

To Summarise this short story, the question is not how to be a leader, the question is which style would you choose to be from the above Leadership styles ,which Exist in all of us.

In the olden days, people who sacrificed their food, family and health were called Saints….and today, they are called Software Engineers.

A software engineer’s son, keeps on pestering his mom for a quite long time. His mom gets irritated and shouts at him saying ” How many times should i tell you that ” YOU ARE BORN, AND NOT DOWNLOADED”.

Well, these are some of the freakiest jokes found in the internet. Keeping aside the jokes, one needs to know why and what is making people create a overdosed mockery on the software engineers. To know this, Ive conducted a small survey on few of my friends and few colleagues at my office as part of my project “Research your Project” for “Toastmasters International”. The results were like this :

60 % –  Said that, they are not happy with their job.
80% –   Sitting before their computer ,at times question themselves:
                What the hell I’m doing here” ? ? ? ?
40% –    Feel that they are at a wrong place
100% suffer from eating and sleeping disorders
80% – Feel that they are unable to pursue their passion, due to over work
70%-  Feel, that they are not able to spend time with their family.
60% – Use corporate  language in the course of their daily conversation
2/3 managers, faced a situation wherein they were bound, to say a few people – “ don’t come to me saying you don’t know what you are doing?”

People feel that the so-called software engineers are a bunch of aliens living in a microcosm called Software. These people are imbibed with abounding technical terms and corporate ways of doing/treating things. They display them wherever they go which creates an outlandish and awful impression on others.

There are many people in my project area, who work for 24/7, even on Saturdays I wonder what his family thinks about him. His wife might be saying to their kids-“the uncle in this photo is your dad, he comes home when you are asleep, go and play with him, if you miss him today, u can only see him only on next Sunday”.  This is a dangerous deception wherein we are caught, and slowly sailing away from the feel of reality and human love.

They kickstart a day with a computer and end it with a computer. Their greatest happiness is an appreciation mailer from their client. Their greatest fear is an escalation mailer to manager.

Their life is  3 MUCH, with 3 TASKS, 6 MEETINGS and 9 COFFEE. They get money, appreciations and accolades on one side, but they slowly move farther from the essence of family life, passion, and good health.

All their emotions, be it action, sentiment, romance, tragedy…are hidden in their emails. And when they look back in life, they are left with nothing but a bunch of machines wherein all their memories are treasured.

THE WORLD LAUGHS AT YOU, WHEN YOU DONT LAUGH AT YOURSELF. Start laughing at yourself, as ive been doing it since the past 10 minutes writing this article. Balance your, work, family, and health. Give equal importance to all. Get closer to human world.

Life’s Little Surprise..

“Please do visit my blog”….”Please give feedback on my blog”…..”Please do comment on my posts”…my both ears used to get shot by these frequent remarks by my friends. I wondered what is this blogging all about and why people are so crazy about it. Google came to my rescue enlightening me that a blog is a space which can be filled with one’s own thoughts and persuasions and can be publicized.

Utterly absorbed by those blog remarks…the feeling of jealousy had a clung on my shoulders like a garment , and i started my web journey along with my mate Google in search of a blog. And at last, i had my blog. I searched for some word press blogs and got some. Among them i found something special in one of the blog. It didn’t had any complex writings which people find difficult to read.It very classy and filled with some smooth articles which upon reading gave me a feeling of cool wind blowing around my head.

I didn’t step back to comment on those entries and truly appreciated them. Next day, a girl responded with a simple comment thanking me for that. I could find that she was Archana Dixit the owner of the blog. I started my blog, by copying some of her writing and ideas. She was my prime UN-welcomed  mentor.

Days passed on, i became busy with college stuff and some other avocations, and then the still interest of blogging evaporated like a wan ghost out of my existence. And i completely lost grip on blogging. But i couldn’t get a proper chance of thanking that girl for having unknowingly shown me ways to blog.

Time went by, and after a long span of 1464 days that is, 4 years, things got changed and i joined Computer Sciences Corporation @ Chennai. Later i was taken into as one of the member of the editorial board of an E-Magazine by the name “Insurance Insider”. All my blogger interests were washed away, nothing more than a pail of sand left by a careless child too near a sea. I didn’t care to open my blog which was isolated since 4years and scattered like  wind-blown leaves.

One fine day, i was called for a meeting to discuss the on-going proceedings on the E-Magazine. I saw a name in the invitees list, which made my mouth open in shock as if Ive seen a raising volcano before my eyes. It was “Archana Dixit”. After the meeting is ended, i went up to the Designer of the magazine and asked him if he knows this girl. He responded saying, that shes a member of the editorial team and that she works for the magazine.

I, immediately, opened our internal chatting messenger and started looking out for  her name. Lots of  thoughts were running through my mind, posing me curious questions ..”is that the same blogger girl you met 4 years back?”…”what happens if she is not?”….I initially thought even if she is not the one i was searching for…lets take a try..i must take the risk as a soldier must face the bullets.

I pinged her asking if she was the one…and waited for her response with my eyes wide open and my fingers tapping the keyboard rock and roll. A BIG SMILE came as a reply. I was a happy guy more than a fat kid with a wholesome of cake in his hands. The i told her that i used to follow her blog and that im very happy that i could meet her in this untold horrific fashion. It was a memorable experience.

I  was happy that i could meet my “blog-guru” in this fashion after a long gap of 1464 days and who interestingly turned out to be my colleague in my work place.  This  story to me means a plot where there is some little surprise. Because that is how life is…….

The Limit of Imagination

Everybody has a personal limit, and together every human has an imagination limit, nobody can imagine more than what he knows and what he exactly is ,but they can act, and thats the foremost difference between people and animals, animals rely on instincts ,whereas humans rely on acting, everybody knows what they can do at maximum level, they know their personal limit, but they act to sync out of range of it.

Acting is because of three kinds of fear, personal fear, professional fear and third is psychological fear.

Personal fear is the fear , which makes a person believe that he is going to loose his most trusted or loved relationships, So they act to convince themselves and their relations that they are not somebody who they are ,but they are somebody who the people around them expect.

The second comes the professional fear, professional fear is a fear which makes a man feel out of place with the people who are of “equal” level professionally around them, they dont want to feel out of place, because it will kill them computationally, so they act as if they are in sync with the people around them.

The last is psychological fear, this fear is the most dangerous of all, as it tends to make a person feel bored of himself, with nothing to achieve , with nothing knowing what to do, and nothing knowing of what they can do.This fear is the most fatal of all, so every person in this world acts as if they are not bored with themselves, they try to do things which ,they obviously cannot do ,but to make themselves and others around them beleive that they are very dynamic ,whereas the hardcore reality is that, every person iis static ,the level of staticity is defined on their knowledge

Knowledge limits imagination ,it limits the staticity, it limits everything.
I am on a path where i know the reality ,and hence i cannot act “naturally” so, i am able to see that i am acting, and hence ,i am not able to get the essence of it, i just woke up from a deep sleep, to a light which is blinding my eye, i want to be a shadow which no light can do anything, i want to be a shadow which no rain can drench. This is not right, This is not wrong, the only thing which is real is now that i am bored of my acting skills, so even i cannot save myself now.
